While shopping online for a small statue of Buddha, and possibly a ring, I came across quite a few of the smiling "fat guy" and only a few of the image of the man sitting in the lotus position, almost with eyes closed.

Where and how did these two vastly different images come about?

As this group says, "...we don't worship the fat guy". I want a small statue of the seren and human-looking Buddha, not the comical image.

Thus I have heard: the "fat guy" is maitreya the first chinese patriarch. I think the "more human" looking one you are speaking of is a representation of Gautama, Shakyamuni or Sidhattha, the origianal Buddha. I'm not 100% tho so anybody else care to step up?
